(Tephritidae) This family is large and includes about 4,625 species spread in all regions of the world. Some species have been moved by international trade, especially fruits. All larvae are herbivorous. Depending on species, larvae develop in fruits, flowers, seeds, leaves, stems and roots of the host plants, causing tumors. Many species are harmful to agriculture. However, some species are useful in biological control for combating the spread of harmful weeds.
