July 18th, 2024

The “Bugs House for Insects” Design Challenge, initiated by Sasol’s Qatar e-Nature initiative in collaboration Qatar’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology’s (MCIT) Studio 5, was successfully concluded on June 11, 2024. This challenge, which spanned 11 weeks, engaged young innovators aged 11 to 18, each participating individually, in designing sustainable urban habitats for insects, marking significant strides in environmental education and technological creativity.

The final pitching event, held on 11 June 2025 saw the presentation of innovative designs to a panel of jurors, Studio 5 mentors and family members. Representing Sasol on the jury was Leyla Mroueh, Sasol Qatar Public Affairs Manager, who joined representatives from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT). During the opening remarks at the pitching session, MCIT juror Ms. Nouf Abdelaziz Al Haddad thanked Sasol for its support and contributions to the success of the challenge.

The challenge was developed to inspire a new generation of environmental advocates and highlight the critical role of technology in preserving biodiversity in Qatar. Five teams confidently pitched their innovations that aimed to support local beetle populations, dragonflies, bees and ladybirds, leveraging Qatar e-Nature as a library and inspiration. The winning team, represented by Mohamad Ahmed, impressed the jury with their unique design to support bees using a solar-powered cooling system and raised platform. All participants were treated to an eco-friendly bag of goodies that included the Sasol-sponsored book ‘Discovering Qatar’ as well as a planting kit and voucher to enjoy a discovery session with the Qatar Natural History Group (QNHG), with winners also gaining a one-year family membership.
