Bulky grey-brown bunting with fairly large head, large conical bill and no white in tail. Underparts heavily streaked, some have irregular black spot on breast, often with pale submoustachial stripe and variable ill-defined malar streak. Heavy fluttering flight, legs often dangling, lacks white on trailing edge of wings of Skylark with which it can be confused. Often perches on telegraph wires. Flocks outside breeding season.
