Slightly smaller than Tufted Duck, shape of head close to that of Pochard. No crest but higher crown than Tufted Duck. It has a flatter sloping forehead and longer dark grey bill with black nail when compared with Tufted Duck. Male is rich chestnut brown with white eye, sharply defined pure white undertail coverts and small white belly area. Female and immatures have dark eyes, they lack the whitish bill base, are dark brown and have pure white and sharply defined white undertail coverts. In flight, differs from Tufted Duck with broader, more conspicuous white wing bar extending onto outermost primaries.
