Common Passage Migrant and Winter Visitor
Easily distinguished by call and contrasting black and white flight pattern. Shy and often well hidden, first seen when flushed. Rather broad black wings above and below contrasting sharply with white belly, and white rump; looks cut off at rear. When standing, blackish upperparts and breast contrast with clear white belly and flanks. Juvenile darker, more uniform and buff-spotted, head rather dark with obvious pale eye-ring and short supercilium in front of eye. Similar Wood distinguished by paler and spotted upperparts, slightly barred flanks, long pale supercilium, and in flight pale underwing-coverts, longer feet-projection and different call.
